The Kurux people—also spelled Oraon—are an indigenous ethnic group primarily found in India, particularly in the states of Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, West Bengal, and Bihar, with smaller communities in Bangladesh and Nepal. They are one of the recognized Scheduled Tribes in India.

1. Language

  • The Kurux people speak Kurukh, a Dravidian language.
  • Kurukh is linguistically related to South Indian languages like Tamil and Kannada, despite the Kurux living in eastern and central India.

Many are also bilingual, speaking regional languages such as Hindi, Sadri, or Bengali.
